Assault with a deadly... Snowball?

In what should have been nothing more than a guy getting his Hummer stuck in the snow and paying for a tow truck to get him free quickly turned into an event that required the dispatch of several cops who probably could have better served the public in a state of emergency snow storm.

Detective Bailer (The correct spelling of the officer's last name was not give at the scene or by those 'investigating' the incident) got his Hummer stuck in the snow in Washington D.C. near a group of locals enjoying a friendly snowball fight. As you can imagine, having just witnessed a Hummer driver dumb enough to get his gigantic truck stuck in a few inches of snow, the snowballers decided he needed to be a part of the fight.

Little did they know that this guy was an armed off-duty police officer with a hair-trigger temper about to have a tantrum. After getting pelted with snowballs, he figures the only way to fight back is by waving his gun around to really let these unarmed civilians know who is boss.

What really blows my mind is that by the end of the video, it appears they intend to arrest a guy. If you watch closely, I can almost guarantee the detective was unable to tell who actually threw snowballs at him and who were actually innocent bystanders. Evidence be damned, somebody had to get arrested...

It seemed like the gun was in his hand for about 10 seconds. It was quickly replaced by a radio. Oddly enough the adults in the crowd kept throwing snowballs at his head.

Organized mass snowball fights should never ever been done over a intersection during a snow storm. Further, while it seemed harmless the guy might not have understood what was going on right at first. I know we used to throw snow balls at cars but stopped when it caused an accident one time. I felt bad. It's a shame the oranizers did not place this fight in a park where it belonged.

Read the follow up stories. He has been suspended from street duty and is now riding a desk. His own employer thinks he acted wrongly.

Organized? There weren't any signs or an ad in the paper... It was local residents having fun in a snowstorm. Not everyone has fun at these things, but most wouldn't pull out a gun as a response, even if it was only brandished for 10 seconds. I would hope that police officers, trained to handle the most stressful of emergency situations, wouldn't turn to their gun in a moment of confusion.

You should feel bad. Throwing snowballs into moving traffic is a terrible idea. Unlike the people in this story who pelted a guy who was at a dead stop having gotten stuck first.

My point remains: What should have been a guy waiting in his truck for his tow truck to arrive turned into an event that needed several police units to show up.

Wasn't DC debating concealed carry laws just a little bit ago? Hmmm.

It's a pathetic day when cops need to get involved in a snowball fight. I seem to remember just a couple weeks ago when in WI over a thousand goofy kids were trying to break the world record for a snowball fight. DC doesn't have a Bascom Hill convenient enough for such a task....yet in WI cops never get involved in snowball fights.

Is it time for 'priorities training' with our law enforcement. A little reminder of what that vow meant...protect AND SERVE.

If I needed cops to defend me for every snowball fight I get into...well, you can assume the blatant use of tax dollars that would be.

A better suggestion, during such snowstorms, let's give them plows! Since they're driving around, why not help clean up the mess! Have them help our medical teams get through the muck!

ps. how the hell does a hummer get stuck in such a small amount of snow! Note all the trucks going by in the video. Piss poor endorsement for the now defunct hummer division. Pathetic! As they always were
