If we can prevent the government from wasting the labor of the people
under the pretense of caring for them, they will be happy. - Thomas Jefferson

TRY VIAGRA

Here's another one of those things where I agree with the spirit of the law, but find it really fucking ridiculous that our Representatives and Senators have nothing better to do than to legislate what we in the land of the free can and cannot do.

Since Congress is bored with the economy, health care, war, other war, social injustice, environment, failing infrastructure, a country hemorrhaging manufacturing jobs, etc. etc., they decided it was time to tackle one of the truly monumental issues of our time:
Loud commercials.

Perhaps they could legislate that all remote control manufacturer's make a bigger mute button instead?

THIS is whyipaytaxes.

Each senator & representative is compelled (at some level) to 'leave a legacy'...to have some tangible effect to SHOW those voters that they DID SOMETHING!!! This happens at every level of government...right down to our aldermen advocating for why THEIR residents alleys need to be plowed before the main streets are attended to. This is yet another example of a few desperate elected officials attempting to create a 'portfolio of accomplishments'.

I have often wondered....as time passes and with the successive election of new officials...if the micro legislation is inevitable because each group of new politicians is striving for that CAUSE that PIECE OF LEGISLATION that CRUCIAL LAW associated with THEIR NAME that will be their lasting piss mark on the tree of american government. They are all striving to be household names like jefferson, washington, even nixon.

Is there some limit, some natural threshold to the amount of important legislation? And if your answer to that is YES then how can we get people to accept their anonymity in historical accounts...how can we get them to accept that from the billions of people on the planet right now, their name...their life...their decisions won't even make it into the history books...that it's not only OKAY but EXPECTED that they WOULDN'T be known because the unsung heros that made sure every day was normal, consistent, and uneventful did exactly what was written in their job description. The numerous nameless people enabling the smooth flow of daily life ARE memorable in their time...as it should be. After all, how many members of the roman senate do YOU remember?
