If we can prevent the government from wasting the labor of the people
under the pretense of caring for them, they will be happy. - Thomas Jefferson

Upgradin'

Another story I missed from long ago. As it turns out, they've extended the $8,500 a pop we've all been spending on a few of us who can buy houses.

But wait, its even better this time... We're also giving $6,500 to existing home buyers so long as they've lived in their current home for 5 of the last 8 years.

Yes. Not only are we using the general fund to help people become homeowners, but now we are also using it to help people who have become bored with their current homes.

Houses for those more fortunate than I...

THIS is whyipaytaxes.

When I think about home ownership I think about how nuts those people are...buying into that american myth that property ownership is freedom. Great marketing scheme! Like cows not questioning the looming building at the end of the long chute....we've bought into the idea that home ownership makes us good people (hear the 'GOOOD DOG!'), patriotic and self sufficient. Yet I watch those homeowners...after a big snow storm laboring over their driveways, sidewalks & scraping snow from the roofs (damn ice jams!)....watch them in the summer with their ritual lawnmowing, trimming, watering, weeding, fussing....watch them agonize over broken toilets, defunct dishwashers, leaky lead ridden pipes and belligerent boilers. I watch them conform to their neighbors through subdivision associations rules(great marketing again!),enforced with the heavy hand of peer scrutiny & neighborhood narking ...how is that freedom? Where is the benefit? Home ownership is slavery to a minute parcel of land, tethered to rules, regulations and responsibilities veiled in an illusion of freedom and authority. Your CASTLE without the servants to tend to the mundane details- a fortress void of luxury yet brimming with hassle. Of course we need to give incentives to lure people into perpetuating this peculiar cycle! After all, we can't all rent or live in condos!

So if my miniscule contribution to the murky tax revenue swamp can be used to entice people into an extended sordid lifestyle, well then I feel honored to facilitate my brethren's enthusiastic joy at embarking on such tortures!

UPDATE
The extended tax breaks only last until April. Apparently there IS a limit to how much of the group's funds we'll give to its individuals. Go ahead, try to define that limit!

As a renter, I emphasize with Anon above. I've often thought about how nice it would be to be putting my monthly housing expenses into an investment for the future. Then I realize that I could never live in on place for that long. It does feel like a trap, a method to keep people invested in their communities. (Which isn't a bad thing, but I tend to reject attempts to modify my behavior (when I realize the attempt))
