under the pretense of caring for them, they will be happy. - Thomas Jefferson

My dogs are killing me...

A great example of a system that means well but fails us nonetheless.

Just outside of Rockford, Illinois, there was older fellow, Colin Slater who lived on a farm. Being an older fellow, the farm was not an active farm so much as a big ol' piece of land. At some point he started collecting stray dogs. He didn't feed 'em much, he didn't take very good care of them, but instead of dodging traffic they were in a place they chose to stay in. Along with the dogs was a donkey, some cats, etc.
County removes last few dogs from Capron farm(rrs)

Sounds just horrible! How dare he provide a place where stray dogs go to die? (Its not like he went around stealing pets out of yards and held them against their will)

So, lets have animal control go busting in and save these dogs! It'll be worth the taxpayer money involved in the investigation and prosecution of this dangerous 79 year old man! (He faces a year in jail)

After spending weeks searching the farm for all of the dogs (yes, the farm was big enough that it took weeks to find all of the animals) they took a total of 103 dogs off of his property.

They summarily killed 71 of them.

Let that sink in. ...
We spent a butt-tonne of money to 'save' these dogs, then we paid to kill 69% of them. It cost the humane society something like $10,000 just to slaughter them.

Death beats mange...

Again, why is it necessary to treat some animals "right" (whatever that means) yet it is okay to slaughter others? And why is it okay to condemn those countries that eat or "mistreat" the animals we view as pets? And why do we shrug off the viewpoints of those countries that revere cows, the way we revere dogs? Cows are cool. Why don't we revere them they way we revere dogs and horses? Oh. Wait. I think I know. Because they are super yummy. They don't have feelings, intuition; they don't get us the way dogs get us, man.

Sigh.

While reading cc's comment, I am reminded of another BS 'You can't slaughter MY favorite animal' story:
Last year, a bill was signed into a law by Rod 'I'm not as crazy as you are about me' Blagojevich outlawing horse slaughter, effectively closing down the only horse slaughtering plant in America. Because it has long since been illegal to eat horse meat in the U.S., (Can someone explain THAT to me???) the plant closed down by this law had taken in Americas older or gimped horses for slaughter and exported the meat to countries who like meat, even if it could have once been ridden across a beautiful spring meadow.
Since then, I've heard numerous stories about horses around the country dieing of old age, and being abandoned in droves when coupling the fact that the owners can't find anyone to put them out economically put them of their misery [and dispose of the remains] while the economic downturn makes it difficult to keep a horse around.
Whatever. Humans have such a twisted view of the world around them...
What's wrong with:
*I* don't believe in eating horses so *I* won't be eating them.
Why must it be:
*I* don't believe in eating horses so *I'm* going to lobby the government until the act is illegal and I've destroyed an entire industry.

Why am I not surprised the horse slaughterhouse is in Chicago? Or near, I would imagine.
